2018
PHOTO KYIV FAIR 2018 exhibition is impressive! Almost three dozen galleries and art centres from Ukraine and abroad, about 100 painters and more than 500 art photos on the one exhibition area. Opened on 1 November 2018 at the Chicago Central House, it became the largest cultural event of the month in the capital of Ukraine. Within the framework of art event, Art & Culture Foundation Brovdi Art presented its project of contemporary photography “Fragmentation. On the Verge”, headed by the curator Taras Tabaka
What is the essence of the project, joined by the Ukrainian and German photo artists?
The curator Taras Tabaka said, “fragmentariness, clip art, an intervision of disparate, at first glance, images are subject to the need for solitude and reflections. Phenomenological connections between things that are at different points of space/time form the unified space displayed in each fragment.” According to him, interdisciplinary interaction, multimedia of contemporary art brings an artistic photo to the edges of the new reality both as a worldview perception and in self-expression. “The evolution of photography in our time, in the context of a dispute of form and content, is an important and intriguing process that we are witnessing,” the curator of the project said.
“Fragmentation. On the verge” presented photographs of the Ukrainian and German artists: Erika HEINE, Klaus BLECHER, Nata Popova, Mykhailo Palinchak, Robert Dovganych, Ivan Nebesbyk, Oleksandra Liven, Viktor Domin and Volodymyr Pavlyshyn (jr.).
Thus, in particular, the Uzhhorod photographer, journalist, curator Robert Dovganych presented a series of works, entitled “Internal space of external dimension”, created “during the study of the colour and form during the period of spring melancholy aggravation”. A painter, photographer, art critic Ivan Nebesnyk (jr.) participated in the exhibition with “Short Stories”. As the author himself noted, this is a project about how, “at the moment devoid of bright moments and full of melancholic rhythms of winter, I felt “street”. Historic family portraits, images of people and animals, horrible premises, enchanted landscapes are the basis of the creative experiments of the artistic couple from Mülltal (Germany) Erika HEINE and Klaus BLECHER.
An art critics, curators, viewers highly appreciated the photo exhibition. Thus, in particular, the famous Ukrainian-Danish artist, collage artist with a world name Sergei Sviatchenko, who also presented his works at the photo fair, noted the high level of organization of the art event and its significance in the cultural life of Ukraine. “What is happening in Kyiv is a great and very important event for popularizing the art of photography. After all, if we are talking about priorities, then painting or some similar things are of higher priority, but everyone understands that photography is a separate type of art, photos also need to be collected. Therefore, I believe that everything that is happening here is extremely important!”
The founder of the art portal ArtsLooker, Mykhailo Kyreito, noted that presented were really interesting projects and in general, it deserves the attention not only of photography art admirers but also of a wide range of viewers. “The exhibition was really great, it was nice to see both Ukrainian photo artists and representatives of other countries – this means that photography is popularized, there is a demand for it. And I am very glad that there is such an opportunity in the capital of our country to get acquainted with new trends of this art, to see interesting trends. Traditionally, a very interesting project was presented by Sergei Sviatchenko, but in general, the whole photo exhibition left nice impressions!”
According to the famous Ukrainian artist Oleg Tistol, Photo Kyiv Fair 2018 was organized at a European level. He, in particular, noted: “The first impressions are very good. On the opening day, Sergei Sviatchenko asked me: “What do you think?” I say: “At least three times better than “Nude” photo festival in Arles in 2011. This is serious. Do not forget that this is a fair, and it should be taken into account, but in fact, it looks like a good Biennale. This suggests that “life begins”. I like the trends, and the direction is correct.”
Photo Kyiv Fair 2018 will last until 4 November. There is very little time left to see the world of contemporary photography in all its diversity!
