Performance of Sergei Sviatchenko – the brightest event of the first day of Kyiv Art Fair

On 23 May 2018, it was presented a performance-collage of Sergei Sviatchenko within the opening of Kyiv Art Fair. The artist, who for the first time in almost thirty years returned from Denmark to the Ukrainian cultural space, together with Oleg Tistol is presenting a special project-installation "The End of Spring". At the same time, in the next pavilion, Sviatchenko decided to demonstrate to the audience the performance of his world-famous Less-collage.

The electrified atmosphere, numerous art admirers, the expectation of something incredible – that was the pavilion of Abramovych.Art platform a few minutes before the action of the most famous collage artist of the present. It should be noted that the performance of Sviatchenko drew a lot of attention and for a short time, it became an epicentre of the art festival. The artist did not disappoint. Step by step, demonstrating a wonderful and unusual technique, he told the audience about his life and creativity with help of his works.

“This is a performance about memory and return,” Sergei Sviatchenko told during the show. “We always go somewhere – we leave somewhere and then we come back. Returning as a philosophical idea – that's what I'm talking about. Finally, I am back as well! The second is the memory, which always closes and opens. This is my project.”

The series of works that the artist used for his performance is bright Less-collages – they made Sviatchenko a legend in this direction of contemporary art. “That's all is me now, these are my works, which are exhibited all over the world. I'll cut the holes with a knife in them, and inside there will be a special installation which I made special for you. And, in this installation, there is a main architectural monument of Kyiv which I put on my face ...”

According to Sergei Sviatchenko, creating such a collage, he wanted to say that, even after a long time, he remembered and appreciated the history and legacy in which he grew up. And now, coming back home, he is sincerely grateful for the support of Brovdi Art Foundation and Abramovych.Art platform. "Amazing people – the Brovdi family and Igor Abramovych – they invited me and now I am in my native land. Now I am ready to fully co-operate, create projects, I have a huge experience in creating exhibitions and I want to share it with everyone," Sergei Sviatchenko added after his performance.

Sergei Sviatchenko is a Ukrainian-Danish artist. He works in genres of painting, collage, video, installation, photography. He is considered to be one of the founders of contemporary Ukrainian art. With the assistance of Sviatchenko as an organizer and curator, it was held the first exhibitions of contemporary art in Soviet Ukraine (1987, 1988, 1990). In the 1980s, he headed the Centre for Contemporary Art in Kyiv. Since 1990, he has been living and working in Denmark. The artist's works have been repeatedly exhibited at personal and collective exhibitions in numerous European countries, as well as in the United States and Canada.
